![]() Maybe it's a bridge overhead covered in rocks that are ready to fall several z-levels to pummel those below. I have monuments built for each special enemy that I've killed with a custom trap. If you have to work for it, it's all that much sweeter. like my other post here says, use a real dwarf's trap, not a ton of cage traps. Get some war dogs, get some walls, get some archers. You NEED to keep your military safe until they can clash with the goblins. They may take 30 shots to kill your dwarf - but the first couple will make him fucking useless. Dogs are like bolt magnets, and that makes dogs pretty freaking great to have in a squad of dwarfs who hate to be shot.Įver notice how one bolt hit to a non-vital part of a dwarf will stun the dwarf and cause him to lie down and bleed or run in a circle? (or to wait out the seige - you're a dwarf, you don't actually NEED the surface, do you) Dogs are your best friends here. (legit, the higher the walls the more trouble the gobbos will have shooting through the fortifications)Īfter the skrimish is done and all your boltslingers are full of holes or dead, it is time for the charge. ![]() You have a decided home feild advantage when it comes to the skrimish, since you've built high walls with fortifications. You gotta pepper those green skinned faggots with bolts first to wear them down. If you're expecting to be able to drop your bridge and charge a full seige of goblins and win without trouble, you're being dense as a glumprong. Do you know what happens when a city is under seige and the defenders all sally out to meet the attackers? Slaughter happens. Use archers to skrimish with the goblins from behind your fortifications. If you don't have a squad of archers to back up your melee squads, you're basically fucked. No matter how awesome your melee squads are - archers will fuck them up in one half of a split fucking second.Īrchers are the most important military unit. I think using marksdwarves to soften the opposition made all the difference, because the previous siege with like 6 goblins went much more poorly. Only a handful of deaths on my side.īy the end I watched with satisfaction as the last 2 trolls were on the ground unconscious, getting chewed on by my war digs and smashed in the head with steel crossbows. They cleaned up the wounded guys, then all my forces took on the remaining invaders. Once the goblins spread apart into different areas, I dropped the bridge and sent in my 6 poorly trained fighters with cotton candy weapons and leather armor(no real metal industry yet). ![]() I pulled up the bridge, pelted my invaders with a 5 man archer squad using a mixture of ammo(bone bolts, silver, steel, whatever we had in the fortress). I had a 42 Goblin / 7 Troll siege happen this morning. I haven't played since 40d, but I'm playing my first successful fortress now. I have a Giant Monitor Lizard from the first elven caravan that not only lays tasty eggs, but chomps on gobbo heads when they get too close.Īvoid engaging Lashers in melee combat at any cost. Not sure whether there is a difference between these two options, but it should up the amount of sparring, which is where the real training happens.īuild ropes out in the wilderness and chain up some useless animals to act as early-alarm systems gives you time to get you military into position before the ambushes reach your front gate.Įven just a few simple traps in front of some key routes to your gates can soften up enemies enough to level the playing field once it comes to melee range.īuy some Giant animals from the elves and pasture them around your main entrance. Try using either walls or narrow walkways so that they have no choice but to be right up against the fortifications they can't see through fortifications unless they are standing next to them.įor more expedient training, either make lots of 2-dwarf squads with dwarves at similar combat levels (similar levels in armor, shield, dodge, fighter, kicker, etc.), or if using 10-dwarf squads, give each month in the training alert 5x "Train (2 minimum)" orders (Yeah, you can give multiple sets of orders for a squad in the same month). Have a balcony/parapetsabove and overlooking your main entrance, lined with fortifications that you can station marksdwarves at to shoot incoming enemies.
